This watch is closest in appearance to the Elgin 539 which used a 15 or 16 jewel movement and were made for the USAAF between 1940 and 1945. The original watch was made from plated basemetal (to save steel) but this modern recreation is solid stainless steel so it should stand the test of time better than the originals.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe history of our recreation and how it came into being goes back over 10 years to January 2009 when we were approached by a US veterans association who asked us to examine the viability of making a watch which was identical in appearance to the original watches which were made by Hamilton, Bulova and Benrus during the Vietnam war. We were sent samples of watches to examine and also the original specification sheets and the result was a watch which was very close to the original and used a high grade fully jewelled handwound movement, this watch was the GG-W-113 which we still make. As a result of making that watch we were contacted again with a view to recreating this even earlier model because these are now almost impossible to find in good sound condition. The special covert matt black non reflective PVD finish of this model is often specified in military contracts for many special forces units. In the PVD process the steel is not black all the way through because the color is created by a special chemical PVD plating process which is vastly superior to painted finishes used on some lower quality watches which can quickly fade or rub off. This PVD process means that the color of the steel is altered at a molecular level, therefore it will not deteriorate even during heavy usage although it can be compromised if the case is badly damaged by a piece of metal being gouged out or if it's worn down by really heavy abrasion against rocks or something similar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInterstingly we have seen some of our PVD divers watches coming in for service which we made over 20 years ago and often the watch is in very poor condition with significant damage and signs of wear but the PVD case is normally still in excellent condition so it is clearly very durable. What this means is because they are so small even though the seals are working fine to keep water out the helium molecules can still get through and enter the watch even though other gases and water cannot.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe main users professionally of watches with helium escape valves are saturation divers who spend long periods of time at great depth with high pressure, the result is that the helium molecules can build up inside the watch creating pressure inside the case, this can inflict serious damage to the watch and even blow out the crystal or crown when it’s unscrewed, this is potentially extremely dangerous if for example you are just checking or resetting the time, it can also potentially write off the watch. What the helium escape valve does is automatically allow the helium molecules to escape from the watch during decompression when the watch returns to normal standard sea level pressure. The valve is only one way so it lets the helium out but prevents anything external getting in.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor anyone who does not know why the helium is an issue, it’s important to understand why helium is employed for deep diving. The answer is that synthetic sapphire is by far the best material for watch crystals because it is very strong and also shatter and scratch-resistant, these characteristics make it very appealing to military and security personnel, police officers and people who lead active outdoor lifestyles, these groups account for over 70% of our customers. To get things into perspective we find that when clients have accidents with watches resulting in a cracked crystal over 90% are usually watches with mineral glass crystals, even factoring in that we use hardened mineral crystals they still do not come close to sapphire for durability under adverse conditions. The watches at the time were made in a variety of slightly different styles by Benrus, Bulova and Waltham but were all based on an original US government specification laid down at the time. Many of the original watches used a 15 or 16 jewel movement but this one has 24 jewels to improve accuracy.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular watch came into being because in January 2009 we were approached by a US veterans association who asked us to examine the viability of making a watch which was similar in appearance to the original watches which were made during the Vietnam war. We were sent samples of watches to examine and also the original specification sheeets and the result was a watch which was very close to the original and uses a high grade fully jewelled handwound movement. As a result of making that watch we were contacted again with a view to recreating a limited edition and as a result we are planning to manufacture a range of variants over the next few. The original watches are now almost impossible to find in good sound condition and in mint condition are becoming fairly valuable so this recreation is a cost effective way to own a watch made in the spirit of the original but with a unique non reflective PVD finish, this finish is often specified in military contracts for many special forces units as well as by anti terrorist units and for various covert operations. In the PVD process the steel is not black all the way through because the color is created by a special chemical PVD plating process which is vastly superior to the painted finish used on some lower quality watches which can easily fade or rub off.
